Description

Excerpt from The Complete Story of the Transvaal, From the "Great Trek" To the Convention of London: With Appendix Comprising Ministerial Declarations of Policy and Official Documents IN presenting a history of the Transvaal, and of our connection with it, I have to apologize for many shortcomings. The work has been compiled under considerable difficulties. The bulk Of it was written in a small up-country town, at a distance from all Official sources of information, and in the intervals of professional duties. It has been delayed by the loss at Port Elizabeth of nearly all the material I had collected, and by the difficulty of procuring correct and trustworthy accounts of the facts narrated. It has no pretension to any graces of style, and it does not aim at being more than a convenient book of reference. If it enables the readers to mete out blame where blame is due, and to accord praise where praise is merited, the object of the work will be effected.
