Description

Excerpt from The Days of James Iiij, 1488-1513: Extracts From the Royal Letters, Polydore Vergil and Hall James the Fourth was king at a time of great political and social change in Europe, and Scotland was not outside the influence. She began to assume a position in European politics, chiefly because of the opportunity which she afforded for furthering or checking the schemes against the insecure throne of Henry VII. A proof of this position is found in the large correspondence which James held with nearly every power in Europe from Spain to the Baltic. This was the time too of Scotland's naval and commercial expansion. The long feud with England was ended by the peace of 1502, the first for over one hundred and seventy years; and James was wedded to Margaret Tudor in the following year, exactly a century before the accession of their great grandson to the English throne. Yet ten years later, Scotland, through the treachery of one man and the folly of another, lost her king and almost all her nobility on English soil.
