The black substance, known in commerce by that name, the composition of which was first discovered by the illustrious Scheele, is a compound of manganese, and the largest proportion of oxygen, with which that metal is capable of uniting, without being acidified. It is, however, by no means a pure peroxide of manganese; for it contains not only carbonates of lime and baryta, the oxides of iron, copper, and lead, but occasionally a little sulphate and muriate of lime. The last-mentioned substance, by affording chlorine on the addition of sulphuric acid, has led to the erroneous opinion that chlorine is always present in the native peroxide.
