This book concerns the nature of the European Union and its external role in relation to social issues raised by globalisation. In essence, this involves the ways in which the EU influences, both directly and indirectly, the rest of the world in relation to the social component of globalisation. Globalisation is often portrayed as an economic phenomenon benefiting only a small percentage of the world's population at the expense, largely, of the more socially excluded members of developing countries. It addresses the social side to the economic phenomenon: the effects on people and societies of the globalisation of economic systems internationally. It intends to be a first exploratory look at this rather innovative topic, providing an overview of the key areas. It aims to be comprehensive in its coverage, including both theoretical and empirical approaches and the perspectives from different disciplines. The book will capture the interest of those with an interest in European Union affairs, as well as those interested in globalisation, social issues or human rights.
