John Galsworthy takes us from Fleur and Michaels wedding into the first couple of years of their marital life. Fleur is far from the passionate and vibrant woman we last saw in the first volume of the Forsyte Saga. Fleur is now a respected wife in a marriage that she feels empty in and a British socialite who is somewhat lost in her own emotions and unfulfilled. Her father, Soames is always nearby and has a selfless, unconditional love and support towards his daughter which costs him his life in the end, but doesn't come without love thankfully. He's probably the only person who understands Fleur and her lack of passion – so his love for her is a blessing in reality.
Her first and only love Jon Forsyte returns from America with his wife and it doesn't take long for these two reunite which is both passionate and comes with consequences – these two obviously deserve a happy ending with each other, but never seem to get there.
A very interesting and intriguing novel which keeps me wanting to know more and fills my love of long sagas that span generations throughout the decades. No fuzzy edges here – hard truths and realism takes place!
