But in spite of this policy of persecution, perhaps by reason of it, the work of propagandism went on in secret, and by the end of the reign there was not aprovince in France, except Brittany, in which Protestantism had not acquired a foothold. Its adherents came chicfly from the artisans of the towns, With a sprinkling of monks and cures but it also penetrated into a few country districts, such as the neighbourhood of Rouen, and though the majority of the humanists were, like Rabelais.
