Habitants of (hells, whofe ufual abode is in the depths of the Ocean, and may have been forced from their hold in an hof'rile manner, by animals more'powerful than themfelves; and having efcaped the enemy, have rifen to the fur face, and by the hardening nature of the air, may have acquired a toughnefs to their fkin, and like wife {trength futiicient to float or fwim, according to the feveral properties with which nature may have endowed them; in flaort, their external appearance firongly en forces my Opinion, and molt efpe cially when we confider, that the animals of the l\/iollufca, bear fo firong a refemblance in form and generic character to thofe inhabit ing (hells, and that they all are ca pahle of contraction and expanfion. The animals arranged under the orders Vermes and Mollufca, in ternally are endued with inhumer able mufcles, which give them' the peculiar property of increafing.
