Greg Philo examines the media strategies of political parties in the 1980s, and considers the effects of recent changes in the legal and commercial structure of broadcasting, including the 1990 Broadcasting Act. Overall, it illustrates how the struggle by various groups to "manage the media" has interrelated with a transformation of political life, as traditional values of consensus have been changed by those of the free market.
