"In a word... epic."

‘Hazards of Love’ is the fifth Decemberists album released in March 2009 and follows the 2006 release ‘The Crane Wife’. It was well worth the wait. ‘The Hazards of Love’ has been accurately described as a folk-opera and it is truly epic. The tracks seemlessly weave into each other making an album that flows magically. I particualrly enjoyed the use of reprisals and simple yet incredibly affective riffs. I would not recommend listening to this album in parts, it must be enoyed in its entirety, as Colin Meloy intended. If this album has any fault it would be that none of the tracks that stand alone as successfully as those such as ‘O Valencia’ and ‘Yankee Bayonet’ on its predecessor, ‘The Crane Wife’. As a fan of Meloy and The Decemberists I am rather biased, but if you liked ‘The Crane Wife’ or enjoy indie-folk music generally I highly recommend this album. Two big thumbs up from me.

Description

The Hazards Of Love is the follow-up to the group’s 2006 breakthrough album, The Crane Wife.

The Hazards Of Love tells the tale of a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William; a forest queen; and a cold-blooded, lascivious rake in “The Rake’s Song”. Lavender Diamond's Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden deliver the lead vocals for the female characters, while My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Robyn Hitchcock and the Spinanes' Rebecca Gates appear in supporting roles.

“There’s an odd bond between the music of the British folk revival and classic metal,” says lead singer Colin Maloy. “A natural connection between, like, Fairport Convention and Black Sabbath – of course, Sandy Denny from Fairport even sang with Led Zeppelin on ‘The Battle of Evermore.’ I think there’s a shared sense of narrative and ambience, of moving beyond the first person in your writing. And I thought it would be interesting to mess around with that.”
