Description

During the Middle Ages, Arabic, Turkish, Indus and Chinese cultures produced the world's best scientists, astronomers, mathematicians, physicians, poets and inventors at a time when Europe suffered through the Dark Ages. In 1057, a Viking slave ship kidnaps a youth off a beach in Wales and a boy from Normandy and sells them on an eastern slave market to a khan, emperor of 10 walled cities on the Silk Road. They are trained as horse fighters, then educated, one as a physician and the other an expert in agriculture and animal husbandry. They return to William the Conqueror's Britannia and its immeasurable brutality. Though skilled fighters with the short sword and compound bow and capable of brutish behavior themselves, their intellect has been leavened by eastern knowledge, philosophy and religion. Declared heretics before the Norman court, they are released to trek across Britannia. They encounter assassins, Norman warriors, Saxon rebels and a bandit Welsh longbowman. History and the slavery of feudal England unfold as they fight their way to claim a fiefdom in the warring frontier of Wales.

Author Biography:

When 9/11 struck, John Wright was a retired newspaperman of 30 years experience with no wish to write a book. A week after the twin tower tragedy, he awoke with a novel in him. Thus The Healer. Born in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada, John has been writing all his adult life. A graduate of Ryerson's College journalism program, he has been a reporter, editor, columnist, magazine, travel and outdoor writer. He has won several provincial awards and one national Canadian writing award. He finished his career as an outdoor writer with a focus on environmental issues. An outdoorsman, hiker, camper, sailor and cruising skipper of his own 35-foot sailer, he has rolled many of those outdoor experiences into his journal writings. When the first tracings of the plot for The Healer began to excite his mind, he hiked and traveled through The March, the border country between Wales and England, and found rich medieval history in a Shrewsbury library in an account of Norman invasion and Welsh resistance. The Healer and another novel were born. Today, he lives with his wife Elaine on the Bruce Peninsula on the shores of Lake Huron.
