"Things are rarely black and white"

Geralt the Witcher lives in a world where everything is shades of grey and everyone engages in political maneuvering. As a Witcher he tries to stay out of this but fails. The books are English transations of Polish originals. The tone of the book is very similar to the tone of the computer game, so I suppose the translators did an awesome job. The books are what I'd describe as “low fantasy”. The world is grimy, so are its people. Geralt in particular is complex and flawed, sometimes extremely observant, sometimes thick as a plank (especially regards romance). Very entertaining read, worth buying. A short read, however.

"Very enjoyable read"

This book was a real pleasure to read. Being a collection of short stories, there isn't a single plotline, rather, it is a collection of stories of Geralt of Rivia's monster-hunting and problem solving as he travels from one town to the next.

Note that The Sword of Destiny is actually the book that follows this, though it was never officially translated to English and therefore The Blood of Elves is referred to as the second in bookstores. The Sword of Destiny has many translations by fans and can be found online easily.

"Need to this book and the others"
5 stars"

If your a fan of the witcher games and the story that is Geralt of Rivia then this book and the others fill in a lot of details you don't get. Because of this it makes the game better because you have more understanding of the man that is Geralt.

"Didn't stop til it was all read"

A collection of short stories revolving around Geralt, and his Witcher life. First short throws you right into who Geralt is and what he does for a profession. Doesn't hold back when it comes to fighting, blood, and sex. Can't wait to order the next books.

"Loved it"

A great book if you are a fan of the games. It's more of a collection of short stories than one long one, which makes it an easy, casual read. Fills in a lot of the gaps in the games. If you like the games then the books are worth it, you'll get a lot more out of these if you are already familiar with the Witcher universe.

Description

Geralt de Rivia is a witcher. A cunning sorcerer. A merciless assassin. And a cold-blooded killer. His sole purpose: to destroy the monsters that plague the world. But not everything monstrous-looking is evil and not everything fair is good. . . and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth.

The international hit that inspired the video game: The Witcher.

Reviews

“It is [his] world-weariness, combined with his battle-boned powers that make Geralt such an interesting character. Here's hoping THE LAST WISH is merely the opening chapter in his English language adventures.” (EDGE magazine )

“Sapkowski's ‘The Last Wish’ is a great collection of short stories centred around a witcher, Geralt – a rare sorcerous breed who hunts down the monstrous but is feared by the innocent. With a wonderous mix of Eastern European folklore and myth, beautiful princesses, mischievious demons and where all is not as it seems, ‘The Last Wish’ is a great read – perfect for dipping into or just reading cover to cover, as I did.” (WATERSTONES.COM )

The Last Wish is an accomplished retelling of some well-known fairy tales, each transformed almost beyond recognition and given the darkest tinges of horror. This takes the book outside the norms of traditional fantasy writing, while still being anchored in (the more original edges of) sword and sorcery.” (DREAMWATCH )

“This beautifully written character-based story from Polish author Adrezej Sapkowski is a refreshing champion in a genre that's starting to get a little homogenic. While there is the occasional nod to traditional European fairy tales (Snow White, among others), much of the application of supertext and tropes are from a new point of view.” (THE SPECUSPHERE )

“Sapkowski's series has the potential to develop a new audience and appreciation of fantasy and like Mieville and Gaiman, take the old and make it new. This reviewer is certainly looking forward to the next installment of this fresh take on genre fantasy.” (FOUNDATION )
