Description

Excerpt from The Life, Letters and Writings of Charles Lamb, Vol. 3 of 6: Edited, With Notes and Illustrations A larger volume of the Essays of Charles Lamb was issued from the Athenaeum Press by the present editor in February, 1904. Since then, the Essays of Elia (first Series) having been included in the College Entrance Requirements, this edi tion has been prepared with special reference to the needs of our secondary schools. Although much of the matter of the earlier and fuller work has been used, this book is in many respects a new one. Not to infringe upon the rights of the teacher, the beautiful and pathetic story of Lamb's life has been left untold, and only a few suggestions as to methods of study have been made. To avoid similar sins against the pupil, the plan of not giving information that is easily accessible has been adhered to. The right of personal research - a whole some stimulus to interest - is respected in this edition, but help is offered where help is needed. In criticism, analyses of style and structure, and in notes on recondite allusions, the book will, I believe, be found reasonably full.
