Adam finds he must leave his bride to earn his living at sea and becomes involved in helping emigres escape from revolutionary France. Meanwhile, Adam's brother St John's involvement in the murky world of smuggling has made him some dangerous enemies - he is falsely accused of murder and if found guilty will be hanged.
