Description

Excerpt from The Memorbook of Nurnberg: Containing the Names of the Jews Martyred in That City in the Year 5109=1349 A. D. From the Unique Manuscript Preserved in the University Library Cambridge, and Marked; Add, 1506 Again, in the second Crusade, preached by Bernard of Clairvaux, and led by Conrad III. Of Germany, and Louis VII. Of France (1147 in the third under our own Richard coeur-de-lion (1189-1192) and in the fourth (1202 and the fifth (1228 of which the last but one was undertaken at the instigation Of Pope Innocent III., the Jews came in for their full share of suffering. And so, too, when the wars against the Albigeois, etc., were waged (1209-1229) with sanguinary cruelty, the Jews suffered together with these doctrinal descendants Of the Manichaeans and Paulicians. Again, the Crusades of S Louis of France against Egypt (1248 and against the Moslems of Africa with his wild hope of baptising the King of Tunis, and in fact of compelling Moslem and Jew to accept baptism, brought the Jews into the fire of persecution, if not into the waters of Christian Baptism.6 With the last expedition, which ended fatally to S Louis, closes the history of the Crusades against Islam.
