Excerpt from The Monist, Vol. 30: Devoted to the Philosophy of Science Applying the results of embryology, with special em phasis on the biogenetic law, also to anthropology, he made the difficult attempt, obeying his passionate desire for ulti mate conclusions, to outline the developmental history of the whole organic world and wrote a Natural History of Creation which appeared in I868. Being of a popular nature, it went through many editions and was translated into at least fifteen foreign languages. This was followed in 1874 by a more scientific work on Anthropogeny, or the evolution of man proper. These books were discussed for years with extreme animation, but when after the lapse of almost a quarter of a century Haeckel gave a summary On Our Present Knowledge of the Origin of Man at the International Congress of Zoologists at Cambridge in I898, he met with entire accord from this forum of international science.
