The Naked Civil Servant is a 1975 television film on DVD, based on the 1968 autobiography by Quentin Crisp, and directed by Jack Gold.
The Emmy award winning film is a cavalcade of the passionate and comic life of a self professed homosexual, Quentin Crisp.
It re-creates the way society felt about eccentrics in general, and homosexuals in particular. Drawn from his own book, this drama captures the bittersweet experiences of his youthful days in the 1930s, ill fated friendships and the inevitable encounters with prejudice and the law. What emerges is the poignant story of an enduring battle for self-expression, one that has brought few moments of real happiness but equally the fulfilment of confronting the world with the truth about oneself.
Its excellence has been acknowledged by both a Prix Italia and an International Emmy Award. John Hurt’s virtuoso performance in the leading role was honoured by a British Academy Award (BAFTA).
