Adapted from his best-selling autobiography, THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT tells
the coming-of-age story of Quentin Crisp, a homosexual trying to live an openly
flamboyant and gay lifestyle in the intolerant pre-war years. It is easy to see
why Crisp is considered by some to be the 20th century's equivalent of Oscar
Wilde, but it's his unflinching desire not to compromise his lifestyle to suit
the conventions of society that makes this play by turns funny, tragic and
heartwarming.
Critic Reviews:
- " It is well that Hurt's performance is preserved on film, for it is an
extraordinary achievement. " – Charles Faber (Los
Angeles Free Press)
- " The Naked Civil Servant is camp and unabashedly so – but it has far
more going on beneath the surface, and helped usher in more nuanced portrayals
of LGBT people and culture in the years to come. " – Alistair
Ryder (Gay Essential)
- " Thanks to Hurt's extraordinary performance – soft-skinned,
red-lipped and determined to fight politely for his rights – it still seems
relevant and not just an exercise in nostalgia. " – Kate
Muir (Times, UK)
