Description

R. Tolkien's trilogy The Lord of the Rings has been transformed into a cinematographic masterpiece by New Zealand director Peter Jackson. And the
avalanche of Oscars® that followed put the man and his country well and truly on the international screen. In this docomentary, television presenter Jim Hickey
talks to fellow countryman Peter Jackson about the challenges and vision required to make the trilogy. As well as the huge logistical problems of filming and set building in pristine rugged mountain country, Peter talks candidly about the efforts and enterprise of the New Zealanders who worked behind the scenes. There were thousands of them, from the housewives who became little Hobbits, to the carpenters and designers
who built the sets.

Meet some of those who worked behind the cameras - including the Nelson ringmaker who fashioned "the one ring", and the high country musterers who rode as flagbearers in the King's army. Hear from the caterer about the huge challenge of feeding thousands high in the mountains, and the NZ Army soldiers who were tansformed into fierce Orcs and Uruk-Hai.

As for the brewer, the owner of Hobbiton, the helicopter pilots and jetboat drivers, they have their own stories to tell. And there's the brilliant caligrapher, who designed the distinctive Elvish style for Bilbo Baggins' book, the Hobbits' fireworks, and the myriad of maps depicting Middle Earth.

Enjoy this unique look at 'Kiwis' - New Zealanders who live and work in The Real Middle Earth.
