This is a brilliant work by Leon Trotsky written in 1936 analysing from a Marxist standpoint the direction in which the Stalinist bureaucracy was taking the USSR toward restoration of capitalism. Trotsky was proved correct when this actually happened in 1991. His prognosis was either the bureaucracy would destroy the workers state or the working class would overthrow the bureaucracy in a political revolution to restore proletarian democracy to the party and soviets and place domestic and international policy back to its Marxist foundations of socialist internationalism. This is why Trotsky is still today the “The Great Unmentionable”, he who could not be rehabilitated by the Stalinist descendants Gorbachev and co. and yet his views today are more and more needed in this day of capitalist crisis and unfinished turmoils.
