Description

HMAS Australia was one of Beatty's Big Cars, the Battlecruisers, but she alone was to miss the Battle of Jutland, having in turn rammed and collided with the battlecruiser HMAZ New Zealand, twice in three minutes. But in 1914 she'd overseen the conquest of the German Pacific Colonies and she hunted for the elusive German East Adriatic Squadron. She was to circumnavigate the world during the course of her war service, and to come home to see a part of her crew mutiny. After eleven years of service around the world, she was to be scuttled amongst great public unhappiness over the loss of their navies flagship to the Washington Treaty. In this book I follow the battlecruiser through her decade of service to the Empire and Australia. I start in Portsmouth, before moving onto the Pacific and traveling through her years in the North Sea. I have made use of period newspapers that carried recollections by crew member's and liaised with museums in Australia. Plus Ive been fortunate to have input from a number of individuals who have a sound knowledge on HMAS Australia. I have covered the mutiny in depth and other areas that are little known in the Northern Hemisphere a 100 years on. The ships mascot with a naval order against her, the maiden cruise, and the heated debate as to her final fate. This is the first in a trilogy of books covering individual ships of the fledgling Australian navy during the Great War. Book II will cover the most famous of Australia's WW1 warships, HMAS Sydney. The third volume will be a tale of the Australian Submariners in the Dardanelles.
