"Finally some variation on the tired Ace Combat formula"

The story is a prologue to the film. The animation is good but the characters are generally uninteresting and the dialogue is bland. The presentation isn't quite up to the standard of any of project Ace's other games but it's still good.

Because the planes don't carry missles the developer had to come up with a new system to prevent the dogfighting degenerating into turn fests. Now tailing a plane builds up a meter and after hitting a button the player's plane will manuver(by itself) into a more advantagous position. The manuvers look cool and the game gives you the feeling of being a badass ace.

The wii mote controls are tedious but the game supports the gamecube and the classic controller which both work well(personally I find the gamecube controller works better than the other options).

Mission variety is decent but the campaign is over a bit too soon(maybe about 5 hours depending on the difficulty) and maps end up being repeated. Plenty of unlockables but the combat dosen't really have enough depth to have you coming back for all of them unless you're a completionist. At any rate it's better than Ace combat 6.

"Not much of a flying game"
2 stars"

This game's controls are counter intuitive at best, requiring you to hold the remote and nunchuck next to each other, each representing one wing of the plane. To roll, you clunkily move one hand downward, often having much more of an effect than you intended. To tilt you push forward awkwardly. Graphically it's fine, but the control scheme's overwhelming unwieldiness make this game almost unplayable.

In a world where there is no more war, corporations put war on “show” on a massive scale to make people truly feel at peace. In Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces, the player takes the role of a top ranked pilot transferred from another base and newly enlisted in the Cougar Squad that has recently welcomed a batch of intriguing new pilots. Not even the officers at the base are able to hide their confusion at these new recruits who appear to be mere children. One girl, Maumi Orishina, stands out from the rest. In the sky reflected in her eyes, the dogfight begins.
