"A great "new" story about Matariki for kids (& adults)"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I'm a bit of a Matariki fan; the stars, the stories, the excuse for taking a break in winter and imbibing in all things family-food-and-festivals. This story covers a a new story (for me) on the Matariki stars and associated M?ori mythology and weaves it into a very readable family story. I bought the Te Reo M?ori version as well – for the kids and for some reo practice for me. The kids loved that version as well tho' and the artwork is fantastic. The only detraction for me was a lacking in astronomical precision – the shape of Matariki wasn't right, I think (from memory) there is a picture in the evening with Matariki in view but the wrong orientation (plus I'm presuming it's winter so you can't see Matariki in the evening anyway)… that kind of thing. Few people are fussed about this kind of detail so I'm expecting a lot of 5-star ratings in that case!

"Great for a story basket"

A great story and like that it bridges the 7 to nine stars as I have several resources for teaching with the nine stars. Good story line and great illustrations. Love that it is local.

Description

Behind dusty orange hills, where the sky stretches down to the sea, there’s a magical, wild, windy place called Te Mata Hapuku. Sam and Te Rerehua love to visit their Grandma and Poua at Te Mata Hapuku (aka Birdlings Flat). They like to listen to the stories, with a backdrop of whipping wind, flashing torchlight, and the splash of Poua’s gaff in the water. But one night, Grandma notices something mysterious. Someone has stolen some stars from the sky. And then the patupaiarehe come out to play on the beach ... Can Sam and Te Rerehua rescue the Matariki stars?
