Description

Excerpt from The Taylor Anecdote Book: Anecdotes and Letters of Zachary Taylor On the 24th of November, 1784, in Orange county, Virginia, Zachary Taylor was born. His ancestors were among the early settlers of this country, and Richard Taylor, his father, followed in the track of Daniel Boone, settled in Ken tucky when it was yet a wilderness, took an active part in several of the Indian fights, then so common, and distinguished himself in many of the battles of the American revolution, especially with General Washington at Trenton. After the revolution, he became engaged in civil life, served as a member of the state legislature, and as presidential elector, voted in the electoral college for J eifer son, Madison, Monroe, and Clay. With such a father, so devoted in various ways to his fellow-citizens, it is not strange that Zachary Taylor should have manifested in early life a decided taste for military pursuits. This exhibited itself even when at school under the tuition of Master Ayres and when it was thought that Aaron Burr was plotting treason against the state, Taylor joined a volunteer company raised to protect the gov ernment if necessary. When this company was disbanded, Zachary Taylor turned to the cultivation of his farm, where he continued till the death of his brother, who was a lieutenant in the regular army.
