Description

Hawke's Bay has a remarkable history, brief by world standards, yet filled with colour, pace and life. This illustrated history covers the broadest sweep of Hawke's Bay's past, telling the wider tale of people and their ideals. It extends from the Maori history of the district to Hawke's Bay's rumbustuous settler era, the highs and lows of the twentieth century with its wars, depressions and booms; and the remarkable social transformations of the early twenty-first.

Author Biography:

Matthew Wright holds post-graduate degrees in history, has worked extensively as a professional historian and writer, and has published more than 550 articles, reviews, and 50 books on topics from travel to social history. His book 'Hawke's Bay: The History of a Province' (Dunmore, Palmerston North, 1994) won a J.M. Sherrard Award in local and regional history in 1996. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society at University College, London.
