Description

Excerpt from The Troubles of Our Catholic Forefathers: Related by Themselves My special thanks are also due to Joseph Wilkinson, Esq., Town Clerk of York, and to John Holtby, Esq., Clerk of the Peace, for the great courtesy and willing readiness with which they gave me access to the records in their official custody; and I am under great obligation to the Reverend Canon Raine, not only for my intro duction to the noble archives of York Minster, but also for his valuable personal assistance. The present volume is more like the first than the second of this series. It has not the advantage of being a consecutive personal. Narrative, like the Life of Father Weston; but this volume has aunity which the first did not possess, for it relates all but exclusively to one time and one place. York is its centre, and almost entirely its scene; and its time is confined to the twenty years during which Henry Hastings, Earl of Huntingdon, was Lord President of the North.
