Description

Excerpt from The United Service Journal and Naval and Military Magazine, 1837, Vol. 3 Human anchored his ships before a brook of running water, in a bay called Caldera, about a league within Cape Blanco, the first con cern of the new commander was to honour the memory of his predeces sor by interring his remains on shore. While his men were digging the grave under the protection of an armed party, who asked them many silly questions from aloof, and our men, says Dampier, did not stick to. Sooth them up with as many falsehoods, purposely to draw them into their clutches. The confab was continued for some time, the Buccaneers protesting to be Spaniards, and the Indians doubting their assertions, till at length they drilled them by discourse so near, that our men laid hold on all three at once. One made a bolt, and escaped before the burial of Cook was over but the other two were taken on board, where, on examination, it proved that they had been sent thither as spies upon the Rovers, whose arrival had been expected.
