Excerpt from The Very Singular Life of John Bruen, Esquire, of Bruen Stapleford, Cheshire: Exhibiting a Variety of Memorable and Exemplary Circumstances, Which May Be of Great Utility to All Persons; But Principally Intended as a Precedent of Piety and Charity for the Inhabitants of the County of Chester In 1667, as would appear by the deed of pur chase of the Indians, to which his name with others is subscribed, he removed with his son, J ohn Bruen, in company With an association of planters, to the Vicinity of the Passaic River, where they founded what is now known as the city of Newark, first called Milford, after the place from which a portion of the planters had removed. The book from which this present volume is re printed, has been for many years in the Editor's family, and he has no knowledge of any other copy in this country.
