Murray McNabb – The Way In Is The Out (2LP)
Sarang Bang Records is proud to present The Way In Is The Way Out, a 2-disc
survey of the work of New Zealand jazz great Murray McNabb. Selected from
McNabb’s personal archive by friend and collaborator Gianmarco Liguori, most
of the music in this set is previously unreleased. The first record focuses on
McNabb’s contributions to jazz from 1976–1987, and the second explores
the wide spectrum of ‘non-jazz’ music he was involved in, such as
experimental electronic music, post-rock, and solo piano.
Murray McNabb (1947–2013) was a pivotal figure in New Zealand jazz – a sonic explorer whose boundless imagination took him to the outer limits of jazz and award-winning music for film and television. A pioneer of electric jazz, McNabb had performed with the likes of Sam Rivers, Dave Holland, Joe Henderson, Ron McClure and Don Cherry. His commercial work is widely known, yet some of his most compelling music never saw the light of day. McNabb was a visionary whose influence in New Zealand music is yet to be fully recognised.
As well as being a tribute to the late keyboardist / composer / arranger, The Way In Is The Way Out also documents important recordings from some of New Zealand’s finest jazz musicians – Brian Smith (Ian Carr/Nucleus, Keith Tippec, Tubby Hayes, Maynard Ferguson) Kim Paterson (Mike Nock, Bernie McGann, Billy Harper, Nathan Haines), Billy KrisGan (Nucleus, Neil Ardley, Pacific Eardrum, Max Merric, Ray Columbus), Frank Gibson Jr (Dr Tree, Space Case, Dionne Warwick, The Walker Brothers) and Bruce Lynch (Rick Wakeman, Kate Bush, Richard Thompson, Cat Stevens).
