"Intriguing film , with an interesting subject."

It’s a different type of beast compared to the majority of other Ghibli films . It’s still highly enjoyable and entertaining , but it’s more grounded in actual historical events , and a topic highly personal to Miyazaki – his love of aircraft and flying machines ! Themes I can easily relate to ?

"A deeply moving film"

I recommend this movie highly. It has a very high tone, useful for forming a love of beauty and goodness in you and your children.

The Wind Rises is a 2013 Japanese Studio Ghibli animated historical drama film on DVD, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (Best Animated Feature, SPIRITED AWAY, 2002) comes a spellbinding movie beyond compare. Experience “perhaps the greatest animated film the cinema has ever seen” (David Ehrlich, Film.com).

Jiro dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted and unable to be a pilot, he becomes one of the world's most accomplished airplane designers, experiencing key historical events in an epic tale of love, perseverance and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world. Bring home the film that has dazzled fans and critics around the globe.

Bursting off the screen with spectacular picture and sound and featuring fascinating bonus material, Miyazaki's final masterpiece, The Wind Rises, is breathtaking. From the Studio Ghibli Collection.

The Wind Rises Movie Reviews

"The Wind Rises is yet another excellent film by master Hayao Miyazaki, and it is quite fitting as his farewell, but it's most certainly bittersweet to see him depart. Highly recommended! " DVD Talk

“One man’s dream of flight and an entire nation’s dream of technological and military supremacy give rise to “The Wind Rises,” Hayao Miyazaki’s elegiac, hauntingly beautiful historical drama inspired by the life of aviation engineer Jiro Horikoshi, who designed Japan’s A6M (or “Zero”) fighter plane. As grown-up as 2008’s “Ponyo” was tot-friendly, Miyazaki’s 11th feature draws a sober, socially astute portrait of Japan between the two World Wars, marked by flights of incredible visual fancy, harrowing images of poverty and destruction, and touches of swooning romance…“Airplanes are beautiful dreams,” notes Caproni in one of pic’s fantasy sequences. So, too, this movie about them.” Variety

“..never less than visually breathtaking throughout.” Empire

“It might not be the director's most immediately accessible films, but it's among his most fascinating and beguiling.” The Playlist

“Laced with poignancy and portent, Miyazaki’s epic is an elegy for lost dreams – and a farewell befitting an animation master.” Total Film

“Of Miyazaki’s many gifts as a filmmaker, perhaps the most subtle is the way he honors time and silence and stillness, values that are in lamentably short supply in most modern-day productions.” Washington Post

“A work of immense mystery and strangeness, loaded with unforgettable images, spectacular sweeps of color and nested, hidden meanings. It feels to me like a meditative epic about Japan’s traumatic journey into modernity, and a complicated allegory about the innocence, arrogance and culpability of artists. It’s one of the most beautiful animated films ever made, and something close to a masterpiece.” Salon.com
