After many delays in the release here and mixed reviews from overseas I was
apprehensive about this headset. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived and
I had a play though.
I got the black ones, they don't look anywhere near as tacky as in the promo
material. The earcup plastics are not shiny and have almost a rubberized look.
I have a habit of breaking headbands with my melon head at the size adjustment
sliders, these are extra thick in that area though and unlikely to break. The
weak point seems to be where the headband tapers into a round pivot point to
allow the earcups to swivel, but I don't think they'll snap. Surround sound is
good. Sound quality overall is perhaps a little average. I expected better from
such an expensive headset, especially with this hyped HDMI connection, but
I certainly do notice the improvement in all aspects compared to cheap or
mid-range headsets. Do they sound as good as the Astro A50– not quite. When
there is no sound being played there is quite a noticable wireless humm, more
than a normal wireless headset, I'm trying to work out if there is interference
coming from something else in my setup but so far no joy. The hum isn't all that
noticeable once in game but if you are fussy it will drive you nuts. Lots of
reviewers have critisised the setup process, I generally found it fine. PS4 was
difficult because the console keeps wanting to send all audio through the USB
chat output, the instructions say how to fix this but my Playstation doesn't
want to stay on the correct settings, I have to take 10 seconds each time
I power on to fix the settings. I also cant get the Playstation to keep the
headset base unit powered consistently when the console is in rest mode and I'm
using another audio source. If the Playstation puts itself to sleep its fine,
but if I put it in rest (with the USB power set to stay on) power to the
Tritton is cut. Some have complained about sound/connection cutting out, I only
experienced this when the PS4 was configured wrong, its almost like the power
and all sound going through the USB cable is too much for it. When sound is
going through HDMI I have had no trouble. Xbox one was a breeze, but you have
to use the included 3.5mm cable to connect mic to your controller if you want
chat. PC was ok once I worked out which output to set audio to output to
(I have several graphics cards and multiple monitors which makes it confusing).
I can't comment on battery life yet as I haven't used them long enough other
than to say they have a Li-Ion battery which can be charged while being used and
so far seems more than sufficient. All-in-all I'm happy with the headset, if
I can isolate the cause of the humming i'll be stoked with them.
