Description

Excerpt from Two Scottish Soldiers: A Soldier of 1688 and Blenheim, a Soldier of the American Revolution, and a Jacobite Laird and His Forbears The second sketch may be considered as a companion picture to the first, as the one deals with a soldier's life during the British, and the other during the American Revolution. The appearance of an article upon Colonel Ferguson, and the breechloading rifle which he invented, in a magazine of 1882, added to the scanty British sources which had then been tapped, a large supply of information from America, indicating how much interest has been felt on the other side of the Atlantic in the operations in which he fell, and his breechloader disappeared. It was satisfactory to find that this fresh information, much of it from sources that would once have been called hostile, in no instance tarnished the good name, and frequently expressed in more glowing language the estimate already formed of the character of the Scottish soldier who lost his life in the endeavour to cover a country in which there were so many well affected inhabitants.
