I thought the subtitles would mean this would be difficult but the acting is superb and easy to follow. The evolution of the characters and how what happened came upon them, not to mention the complex games played by the collaborators becomes quite riveting. The French really have a handle on human nature.
This is a very well-told story of what the German occupation of France was really like (but see the other series (1–3) before you see this one. There are good Germans and very nasty ones too. There are courageous French people and some collaborators so slimy even the SS hold them in contempt. You don't have to know much history to get the story, but it is consistent with what was happening at the time. Well worth the effort.

Summer 1943. The announcement of the STO, an order for all young French men to be taken into forced labour in Germany shakes Villeneuve and all of France to its core. Avoiding capture, Antoine and Claude and a small band of others head into the forest to live in freedom but soon find the hunger, cold and boredom overwhelming. In the village the Resistance grow bolder and bolder, but the new mayor, Chassagne, makes every effort to support the STO and hunt the guerrillas and repression in the village increases day by day.
