The only – and I mean only – saving grace of this movie are the stunningly beautiful visuals: they are at times almost breath-taking. Even the good acting of some cast members can't save the utterly hopeless script. The movie is mostly based on the comic “Ambassador of the Shadows”, and it manages to take all the bad ideas, and ditch all the good ones: a SciFi story with an independent female lead character who saves the day- The movie turns her into your run-of-the-mill damsel in distress for more than half the time. The dark-skinned alien race at the centre of the plot- White-washed without mercy. And they even managed to cram in a boat-load of female objectification where the source material's only misstep in this respect are the high-heeled thigh-high boots of the main protagonist. What a terrible disappointment, crowned in it's failures by the beyond-wooden performance of the male lead. Unless you really want to see pretty images at the price of terrible dialog, enormous plot-holes, and disgustingly outdated stereotypical misrepresentations, please look elsewhere.

Description

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets

A dark force threatens Alpha, a vast metropolis and home to species from a thousand planets. Special operatives Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

Valerian is the visually spectacular new adventure film from Luc Besson, the legendary director of The Professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy, based on the ground-breaking comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers. In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories.

Critic Reviews:

  • " If you're worn down by grim visions of the future, Valerian is the antidote. It's rambunctious and outrageous, but above all else, it keeps things fun. " – Steven Prokopy
  • " The fantasy worlds and creatures rendered in astoundingly beautiful visual effects are worth the ticket price alone, dazzling in 3D and an immersive, imaginative delight. " – Cate Marquis
  • " I think I can sum this film up by saying; The Visuals = Good Bonkers, The Plot = Bad Bonkers. Believe me, it's all bonkers. It is garishly multi-coloured bobbins on an insanely huge scale. It is mostly entertaining and the visual feast is worth it. " – Fiona Underhill
