Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a treat for anime and non-anime fans alike. Even people who are not particularly fond of animated movies would probably like this, if just for the awesome artwork, the character depths and the interesting plot.

You may be thinking Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is just your typical vampire movie. Discard that thought right now. This movie focuses on a mysterious character called D, who is a dunpeal (that is, half vampire and half human) but also a vampire hunter. Not only is he a unique and original character but he is also interesting and strangely loveable.

The dark and gothic plot of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust will have you intrigued and the added twists will surprise you. If you're an anime fan, you will love this. If you're not, try it anyway! If my parents can like it, anyone can. Though, I wouldn't recommend it for younger children. It has a fair amount of violence and some mature themes.

Vampire hunter D is a visual montage of a multitude of styles that I have never seen in a context like this before.

It manages to merge cyberpunk post apocalypse with gothic vampires, other children of the night followed by a hefty dose of Clint eastwood westerns. And I have not seen anything as visually stunning as this in a long time.

As far as the art of Anime goes, this is firmly in the number one spot over Ghost in the Shell and Akira (with Metropolis and Cowboy Bebop movies close behind). It's taken over a year and a half to come out on DVD, but has been well worth the wait.

The DVD is well packaged with a few extras and some behind the scenes documentaries and interactive storyboard features. As usual what you would expect from Madman's attention to quality. If you are a fan or even new to this entertainment medium you cant go far wrong with this modern classic.
