"A poor movie which besmirches the name of the War of the Worlds."
2 stars"

Anyone who has read HG Well's timeless SciFi Classic, The War of the Worlds and seen this movie will be able to tell you there are a very large number of differences.

This movie has taken the story and warped almost beyond recognition, changing the Martians to some unknown alien race, changing the setting from 1890s England to 2000s America, and Changing the main character from a Nameless yet sophisticated English Journalist to a Short, American Crane Operator, played by Tom Cruise who sets out to stay alive and keep his kids alive. In the novel, the main weapon of the martians is, of course, the deadly heat ray, replaced in this film with some sort of Dessication Ray, fired from hair dryers attached to the alien's tripods.

This movie has some brilliant effects, but it is let down by the Americanization of a timeless story. I would appreciate it more as a movie if it were not named the War of the Worlds because it bears little resemblance to the book, and would probably receive a lot less criticism from loyal fans of the book and other, more faithful adaptations.

Description

War of the Worlds is the seminal science fiction classic about alien invasion. H G Wells’ novel was published in 1898, dramatised on radio in 1938 by Orson Welles in a programme that caused widespread panic, filmed once before in 1953, made into a top-selling “rock musical” recording in 1976 and the forerunner of numerous similarly-themed books and films, not the least of which is 1996’s Independence Day which borrowed heavily from some of its ideas.

Now with Steven Spielberg’s new movie – reportedly with a budget bigger than Titanic - comes what must be the ideal marriage of novel and director. With his Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. Spielberg gave us passive aliens who instilled a sense of wonder. Not so with the invaders of Wells’ classic tale whose sole purpose is to wipe us out.

Spielberg’s contemporary re-telling sees the story of humankind’s battle for survival against the unstoppable alien machines through the eyes of one family – Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) his pregnant wife, Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and their daughter, Rachel (Dakota Fanning).

Watch the skies.
