Description

Excerpt from Winter in New Orleans: Season 1912-1913 In Canal Street, between Royal and Bourbon streets, were erected the Touro Buildings early in the last century. The buildings took their name from their owner, one of the lead ing Jewish philanthropists of his time. A few of these buildings are still standing, but for the most part the block is taken up by modern buildings. At the intersection of Canal and Bourbon streets stood Christ Episcopal Church, the first Protestant house of worship in New Orleans. Touro bought the building in 1835 and tore it down erecting in its place a Synagogue known as Congregation Dispersed of Judah. AS monuments to Touro's philanthropy, New Orleans of to-day boasts of the T011ro Infirmary, a modern hospital, T euro-shakespeare Alms House and Touro Synagogue.
