Wives and Daughters tells the story of Molly Gibson, a motherless girl on the verge of womanhood, finding out about life, love and loss for the first time.

Molly has been raised alone by her father, the village doctor. When he suddenly announces that he is going to remarry, Molly must make swift adjustments as another woman takes over Mr Gibson's home and affections, bringing with her her daughter Cynthia.

Despite having opposite personalities, Cynthia and Molly quickly become fast friends, but what is Cynthia hiding? Will they become rivals in love? Things begin to intensify as Molly is forced into keeping secrets against her will…

This is a superbly crafted drama, which really has it all! The acting is faultless, while the length of the film allows the plot to develop naturally. The romance and drama are subtle, yet engaging, making it an excellent film for men and women alike, and very re-watchable. Highly recommended!

Again the BBC excells in presenting this period drama. In her seemingly gentle story, Elizabeth Gaskell chronicles the restrictions placed on women of the time, and how some women were able to rise above them.
