Will and G. Bredi g, who arrive at the conclusions that this change is due to catalytic action, and that atropine is an Optically active base. A. Laden burg, on the other hand, regards atropine as optically inactive, and as standing in the same relation to hyoscyamine as racemic acid does to lmvotartaric acid. He is inclined to think that the sup posed formation Of atropine from hyoscyamine may be due to the employment of impure materials, and that this conversion, although possible, has not yet been actually accomplished.
