Introduction and Interview by Fab 5 Freddy Back in the Days documents the emerging hip-hop scene from 1980-89, before it became what is today's multi-million-dollar multinational industry. Back in the days, gangs would battle not with guns, but by breakdancing. Back in the days, the streets - not corporate planning - set the standards for style. Back in the days, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, photographing everyday people showing off their street style. Eighty full-colour and b/w photos.

Author Biography:

Jamel Shabazz's photographs have appeared in publications such as The Source and Vibe, and in galleries world-wide. He also wrote and directed the documentary Back in the Days. Fab 5 Freddy, one of the founding fathers of underground hip-hop, was the original host of the groundbreaking show, Yo! MTV Raps, and one of the first graffiti artists to exhibit in galleries, alongside Jean-Michele Basquiat and Keith Haring. He directed 70 music videos, co-produced New Jack City and wrote Fresh, Fly, Flavor. He works for Pallas Records in New York.
