Description

Crusoe's Footprints offers an introduction to the rapidly growing new field of cultural studies, charting its development in both Britain and America. Patrick Brantlinger weighs the contribution of structuralism, deconstruction, psychoanalysis, phenomenology and critical theory. He investigates the establishment of cultural history, noting the crucial role of Marxist historians such as E.P. Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm, the French Annales school, and the work of Raymond Williams, amongst others. Brantlinger moves on to consider the setting up in the last two decades of interdisciplinary and radical courses such as women's studies, American studies, and Afro-American studies, together with the crucial importance of feminist criticism as it has developed over the years.
