Description

Updated for 2022. Easy Hikes to the Hidden Past is a unique book concept to get readers off the couch and outside to the Great Outdoors, to not only enjoy some wonderful walks hikes and bike rides, but to also make discoveries of the region's-often hidden-historic past. Hiking books are quite common and a valued resource to new adventures. This book, however, combines well-researched trail explorations with an educational "treasure hunt" for relics of times gone by that should not be forgotten. The Pikes Peak Region Edition covers Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Cripple Creek, Canon City, Monument and Palmer Lake. Not a dry turn-by-turn book but narration with personality. There are a broad range of explorations in Easy Hikes to the Hidden Past offering something for everyone, with varied physical abilities. Some discoveries can be seen from the car window as you drive through history, some can be accessed by walking or on a bike, still others by trail hiking, all of which would be classified as easy to moderate difficulty level. Trail maps, trivia, historical photos, humor and insights.

Rocky Shockley is not a nickname; it is his given name. He enjoys finding, researching and sharing the overlooked relics that are found on his trail hikes.Rocky's years of hotel management experience sharpened his communications skills and developed his love of the tourism industry. Telling the stories of the early history of Colorado Springs is a favorite pastime. He prefers trails that have a history, a story, and discoveries to be found along the way. Rocky is a Certified Interpretive Guide with the National Association of Interpretation. He volunteers his time leading aweekly Guided Nature Hike in the Garden of the Gods, and is on the board of directors for the Friends of Garden of the Gods.Rocky's second career is a professional hiking guide with a historical focus in the Pikes Peak region. This is a perfect fit as he has explored the area most of his life. His stories are told with energy and enthusiasm that showcases his knowledge of historic trails and the pieces of the past found along the way. Rocky's favorite quote is: Hike with your senses. Rocky will often encourage others to stop along the way, to absorb the aroma of the pines, listen to the sounds. To pause to feel the geology of the region that both drew and hindered the prospectors and the pioneers. Rocky regularly chronicles his discoveries in his blog site: Exploring the Lesser Known Pikes Peak Region. (www.6100feet.com) T. Duren Jones loves hiking wilderness trails. Once he's done with one checklist, he on to the next-now exploring for historic remnants through hikes in the Pikes Peak Region and around the state of Colorado.
