Burgess writes in some depth of why and how people travelled by early steam ships across the oceans but mainly the Atlantic. He explains the class divisions of passenger accommodation, the social groups formed within each class, the rigours of passage and how during cruises the ship was regarded as ‘home’. Many of his observations of shipboard life are pertinent to today's cruise industry. Very thoroughly researched and highly recommended.
