Description

Glimpses of Everest A journey from the formation of the continents, via the early Everest expeditions and a historic collection of Player's cigarette cards commemorating the 1924 expedition. From the first ascent to a critical look at today's mass 'irresponsible' high altitude tourism, with a few overlooked Everest 'heroes' given their rightful space. Asking questions, and questioning answers: Why did Mallory choose Irvine over Odell, and what could have been the alternative outcome? Questioning if over 200 who claim oxygen-free ascents of Everest really did do them oxygen-free? Asking if there is any value to the sport in the Himalayan Data Base recording the names of the thousands being dragged up (and down) Nepal's 8000m peaks? And why were so many Nepali workers crowded in a predicted avalanche area, resulting in 16 deaths and 35 children losing their father that day? Pondering why no serious preventive measures have been taken by the government nor the industry - the latter run by 'ignorance, arrogance, incompetence, egos and greed.' The Author. Of Irish/Welsh descent, David joined the Royal Air Force and was posted to NATO Norway, where he stayed. He has worked as a Mountain Guide/Instructor, and in the outdoor and travel industry. He has travelled and climbed worldwide, with a special emphasis on Nepal - organising and leading climbing and trekking groups over 45 years. He spends his time in both Norway and Nepal.
