Description

Idiots and Demons is novel about a British colony, Kassku, struggling for independence. The two main characters of the story are Comrade Russbhakt (an Indian man) and Comrade Bullhorn (an African man). The two men formed a socialist party to fight the British for independence, but they ended up fighting each other, dividing the colony into two distinct enclaves of Indian and African voters. To gain their own political ends, they invoked the idiots and demons of their supporters' psyche, suppressing their unconscious gods. Thus, they created racial hatred, hostilities and violence. Freedom from British rule left them in chaos, corruption, and bloodshed. Churaumanie Bissundyal is a Guyanese American writer who has completed six novels, one nonfiction, five books of poems, three screenplays, and ten plays. In 1988, his play From Ganges to Demerary was staged at Samuell Beckett's Theatre, York University, Toronto, Canada. He won the prestigious American award, The Vera Rubin Residency Award, at Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, New York. He holds an MFA degree (a master's degree in fine arts) and a Ph. D. degree in interdisciplinary studies.
