Description

Traumatic brain injuries can be scary...but they can also be a way to teach all of us how to be closer to the ones we love. Meet Tommy. A young boy who can't wait for his father to come home from serving his country overseas. Tommy and his mom are speaking to their dad on a video call when his unit comes under attack. Later, doctors tell him that his dad was hurt and has a headache. But Tommy wonders why everyone is scared for his dad. Tommy gets headaches too, but no one ever worries about him. As his father returns home after a lengthy hospital stay, Tommy learns more about the challenges facing someone with a traumatic brain injury and what he and his mom can do to help his dad.

Author Biography:

ANTHONY KNOPPS is an Emmy-Award winning storyteller who is living a second life. That's because in July of 2019 he sustained a traumatic brain injury after the car he was in was hit by a distracted driver. He "beat the odds" which said he only had a 21% chance of survival. The idea behind "My Daddy has a Headache" grew out of conversations with his medical team about the challenging nature of these injuries and how to inform young minds about them. Part of Anthony's recovery, which continues today, was an unrelenting focus to turn each moment into a new opportunity to make a difference. That's why 100% of the proceeds from this book will go to a scholarship fund for children of soldiers with traumatic brain injuries. JOELY CORBAN is an artist that has lived with a traumatic brain injury since 1988. Her TBI happened when she was a passenger in a car returning home for Thanksgiving break her first semester in college. The accident affected her ability to read and write for over a decade. Her hard work in rehabilitation finally paid off! She completed a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2017. The title of her MFA thesis was Art of Recovery: Artists Living with Brain Injury. Joely is currently a college-level art instructor. She paints both digitally and with traditional materials.Joely met Anthony Knopps through a dean at a university where they both teach. When Anthony asked her to illustrate "My Daddy has a Headache," her immediate gut feeling was that this book can help more than just the reader! She said yes, and she would illustrate the book for free as long as all proceeds from the book would have to go to benefit fellow brain injury survivors. Anthony was on board with the same idea! Can you believe that two TBIs think alike!? What a team! To see more of her work, please visit www.MsCorban.com.
