Description

Beautiful, full-color photos of kids with disabilities celebrate all types of movement and mobility aids (like wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, prosthetics, and service dogs), while simple, poetic text builds both vocabulary and empathy. New expanded picture book edition includes: information on each mobility aid pictured, age-appropriate discussion questions for parents and educators to discuss body differences, and a guide to inclusive disability language. Part of the 'Everyday Diversity' series - the identity-affirming picture book series created to help families and educators discuss diversity and promote inclusion through everyday topics.

Author Biography:

Archaa Shrivastav (she/her) is an award-winning children's book author, freelance editor, and content creator dedicated to creating and curating Own Voices picture books featuring intersectional identities. As a former first grade teacher and a queer first generation Indian-American, she's passionate about putting identity-affirming stories in the hands of children. Brook Sitgraves Turner (she/her) is a graduate of UC Berkeley and USC's Peter Stark Producing Program. Raised in a multi-generational family of Black women, she's focused on inclusive storytelling across many mediums: children's books, television, film, and podcasts. She's been a member of Film Independent's Project Involve Fellowship, produced documentaries, New York Times recognized podcasts, and written on television shows. In her spare time she runs Pep Packs, a mutual aid delivering free care packages to people recovering from COVID at home. Carina Ho (she/her) is a Bay Area-based music producer, dancer, and author of the Mighty Mara children's book series. As an electronic music producer, she creates work under the moniker ONIKHO and melds her influences of blues, soul, and pop. Having formerly danced professionally with AXIS Dance Company, she often blends dance and music through collaborations with artists both with and without disabilities. She is a Fulbright Fellowship recipient, and has toured both the United States and internationally to teach and perform. As an advocate for inclusion and accessibility, Carina's mission as an artist is to champion greater visibility for people with disabilities. You can see her work at www.onikhomusic.com. Bonnie Lewkowicz has worked for more than 40 years advocating for and creating increased access to sports and outdoor recreation for people with disabilities. She founded Access Northern California (ANC), a nonprofit organization addressing the lack of reliable information about outdoor opportunities for people with mobility disabilities. She's authored several books on accessible trail resources, including A Wheelchair Rider's Guide: San Francisco Bay and Nearby Coast. In her current work, Bonnie focuses on equity in the outdoors and provides training on the inclusion of people with disabilities. Bonnie is also a co-founder of AXIS Dance Company, an acclaimed dance company of disabled and non-disabled dancers.
