This book is designed to provide a basic introduction to the philosophical enquiry into questions of epistemology and to acquaint the reader with the historical period in Europe known as the Enlightenment. The book covers the thought of Descartes, Hume and Kant and strives to bring together traditional thought with contemporary discussion. A companion to Potter's "Readings in Epistemology", the topics covered are the fundamental notions of knowing, scepticism, the structure of knowing, sensations, conceptualisation and the problem of universals, judgment, the controversy of the classical view, memory and testimony, and inference. Study questions aim to provoke further thought on the material presented in each of the chapters.
