"Dance off was the best!"
2 stars"

This was an interesting documentary about the rising of clowning and krumping, but I wouldn't scream from the roof tops that everyone should watch it. The dance-off was the best scene and it did contain some awesome shots of the dancing itself. Didn't feel like there was much character development, but worth 2.5/5 :)

Description

Rize reveals a groundbreaking dance phenomenon that's exploding across the globe. Taking advantage of unprecedented access, this documentary looks at a revolutionary form of artistic expression that first started on the streets of South Central, Las Angeles. The aggressive and visually stunning dance modernizes moves indigenous to African tribal rituals and features mind-blowing, athletic movement sped up to the seemingly impossible. Rize tracks its fascinating evolution: we meet Tommy Johnson (Tommy the Clown), who first created the style as a response to the LA Riots in 1992 and named it "Clowning", as well as the kids who developed the movement into what is now known as Krumping. The kids use dance as an alternative to gangs and hustling: they form their own troupes and paint their faces like warriors, meeting to outperform rival gangs of dancers or just to hone their skills. For the dancers, Krumping becomes a way of life - and a vital part of who they are.

Like Break-dance meets Spellbound with a touch of Electric Boogaloo, Rize explodes from the screen as one of the most infectiously energetic and ispiring documentaries in years. Rize is directed by the legendary David LaChappelle, one of the world's leading photographers and music video directors, responsible for cutting-edge videos from Moby, Gwen Stefani, Blink 182, Christina Aguilera and many more.
