I hadn't read a comic from Snyder, but I knew he was quite a popular writer. I came across this when I was looking for good horror comics, and this was mentioned quite a few times. It certainly met & exceeded my expectations, and pushed me into checking out everything else Snyder has written (which has so far all been great!).
This comic really hits the nail on the head in every way I could ask. Evident from a quick glance, the artwork is ridiculously beautiful. The character's are really strong and you want to see them make it out in tact, you especially want Jack to meet his father. The plot is relatively simple, but incredibly surprising throughout. Pretty much each chapter/issue ends very strongly. It certainly makes it hard not to just flip right on through and finish the book if you're trying to pace yourself.
The dialogue and interaction amongst the characters is just a joy to read. The killer that's stalking Jack is very intense, and surprisingly well written. Usually, they're simplistic and kind of boring “monsters”, but this guy is a charming “salesman” of sorts, with a very creepy ritual. His charm, and confidence really preys on the young & innocent, much like the main characters.
If you're a fan of exciting comics, especially horror, you'll be a fan of this from the start. The entire comic is like the creepy attic scene in Zodiac.
