I loved this book. It has lovely details and well-described characters – even the smugglers – and an innovative plot. The author says it's a fiction based on hearsay about one of her ancestors, which adds to the story's charm. The only reasons I didn't give it a full 5-star rating is because I'm a history lover and hoped for more information about Napoleon, and it bothered me that they never named the dog. But the story itself is beautifully written. There are interesting supporting characters, also, and the book gives a good sense of telling a delightful tale that you'll enjoy reading. By the way, it would be acceptable for teenaged readers because it will give them a sense of what life was like back in the very early 1800's, before modern conveniences were invented (like matches) and they'll see that the ‘younger generation’ is always restless. An entertaining, lovely story with mistaken identity, a cache of coins, contraband, love, loyalty and accountability.
